Meeting Highlights:
The Commissioners discuss the Roads budget for 2026. The department will reduce its expenditures in several ways, including:Doing less chip sealing and replacing it with more crack sealing and patching.
No soil stabilization with magnesium chloride on unpaved roads. This will affect dust abatement.
Less grading on unpaved roads.
Snowplowing and sanding but using no brine. The county has some brine left over from last winter and will continue to use that.
Possibly reducing the staff by six positions after the winter plowing season is over.
The Commissioners consider increasing revenue by:Establishing a Transportation Benefits District. This would allow them to raise the sales tax by .1% and increase car tabs by $20 in the unincorporated areas. Pam Johnson, Treasurer and Cari Hall, Auditor, will try to calculate how much money this would raise.
Put a levy lid lift on the ballot in 2026. This would begin raising revenue in 2027.
Commissioner Timm suggests writing a letter to President Trump and following through on it to try to get the SRS (Save Rural Schools) restored.
Meeting adjourned for the day at 4:11.
